Abstract :
Sensor networks are useful in many areas: to watch the activity of a volcano, to have mobile sensors on vehicles or animals, but also to improve life in smartcities - to find a parking space, guide cars in the city, or measure air quality and do predictive maintenance.
Nathalie Mitton, research director and head of the FUN project team, describes how sensor networks work and what challenges researchers face to improve them: they aim at making the equipments smaller, more powerful, more respectful of the environment, and of course more efficient, especially in terms of communication. To test these devices, an experimental platform is essential.
Julien Vandaële, an Inria research engineer (SED), presents the FIT IoT-Lab at Inria Lille Nord Europe research center. It was created thanks to ANR project launched in 2008 (SensLAB); the FIT-Equipex project followed: it is a federation of various platforms including the FIT IoT-LAB. More than 2300 sensor nodes are available on 6 sites in France, to carry out experiments in embedded wireless communication.
